Lions, Lions / Elephants and more Lions!!
May 2007The past month students, internships and volunteers at Campfire Safaris were lucky to witness the most lion sightings even I can mention. A pride of 14 lion moved onto Campfire Safaris property and have been living here since. Bush walks, night drives and just watching from the tower has delivered 78 sightings already.
THE KILL...with so many lions around we were bound to find a kill and we did!! All the students went on the Friday night out on the town for a beer and dinner (or a pint and tie). Some of the students wanted to return to camp earlier and they were generously taken by Marjolein. The rest stayed on at O’Hagan’s (a pub/restaurant). As Marjolein and the students stopped at the gate one of the students (Saskia) heard a growling noise. Later the other students also heard the noise and Marjolein quickly moved all the students to the tower. They found 6 lions nibbling on a waterbuck. She called the other students, still in town, and without saying they were back at camp in a flash. Until 4h00 that morning we sat watching the lions fill their tummies with fresh meat. WHAT A SIGHTING!!! This was the talk around the campfire for weeks.
The elephants definitely do not want to be last when it comes to sightings!!! On a daily basis we hear, smell and WALK into 1,2,3,9,40 elephants!!! They truly are the bush gentle giants with their calm and patient temperament, allowing us to take photos and watch them going about their way.
RE: Tinus's health: He is doing well on the chemo treatment and we believe he will recover quickly. We all miss him at Campfire and can't wait for his return.
BUSH GREETINGS !!!
